Article:The North Carolina-Louisiana Prostate Cancer Project (PCaP): Methods and Design of a Multidisciplinary Population-Based Cohort Study of Racial Differences in Prostate Cancer Outcomes. The Prostate 66:1162-1176.Schroeder, J.C., Bensen, J.T., Su, L.J., et al. (2006) The prostate cancer rate is the highest for African American in the U.S. For African American, mortality rate due to prostate cancer is higher than white men. Researchers believe that the racial differences in prostate cancer rates are due to the timing of cancer diagnosis, genetic factors, and access to health care. Dr. James Mohler and his colleagues from UNC and LSU initiated the study to identify the factors influencing racial disparity and to determine the most effect way to improve cancer survival. The North Carolina-Louisiana Prostate Cancer Project (PCap) is population-based case-only study, which will include a total of 2000 individuals; 500 individuals each from two racial groups, African American and White, in two states. The study will not only provide valuable information to describe racial disparities in prostate cancer but also contribute to design effective ways to improve cancer survival. |
