Community Outreach
Communities have unique strengths and untapped resources. The number of CCN I partners increased from 4 organizations to 30. This bolstered our ability to provide culturally-appropriate educational activities, develop innovative research activities, provide training opportunities for UNC investigators and community members, as well as provide opportunities to cross-collaborate with other research initiatives, sharing ideas and resources regionally and state-wide. Two noteworthy accomplishments include the Community Grants Program and the Community-based Workshop Series.
Community Grants Program
Initiated in 2007 to engage community-based organizations in the research process regardless of their size, capacity or experience, competitive community grants were awarded to 17 community and faith-based organizations with total budgets exceeding $126,000. Funded projects have focused on a range of activities - implementation of lay health advisor programs, NCI's Body & Soul program, and breast and prostate cancer awareness activities.

Community-based Workshop Series
In partnership with the NC Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute (NC TraCS), a series of free workshops on research topics were designed for non-research audiences. The content provided foundational information to facilitate research, foster partnerships, and build skills.
